What Is the Mother Wound?

What is the mother wound?
The mother wound is the deficiency or absence of nurturing, emotional attunement, or unconditional love from your birth mother, whether intentional or unintentional.
This wound can result from neglect, emotional unavailability, enmeshment, or a mother who was critical, controlling, or competitive rather than nurturing, which can all lead to a deep feeling of unworthiness, a harsh inner critic, and difficulty trusting your own body and intuition in the one who experienced this.
A mother is one of the most important mirrors in our lives. To feel loved and accepted by your Mom is vital to you having a healthy relationship with your body, your worth, and the feminine in all its forms, within you and around you. Unfortunately there are many of us who did not have that.
Many of us carry some version of both the mother wound and the father wound, and healing one often opens the door to healing the other. If your father’s absence or distance feels just as present in your story, I have written about the father wound here too.
Some of our deepest wounds stem from a lack of attunement with our earthly mothers.
Do you find it hard to receive love, rest, or support without feeling guilty?
Was your relationship with your mother critical, enmeshed, or emotionally unavailable?
Do you feel like you have to earn your worth through what you do for others?
Do you struggle to trust your own body and your own intuition?
Perfectionism, chronic people pleasing, an inner critic that will not let up, over mothering everyone but yourself, and difficulty setting boundaries are all symptoms of the mother wound.
If we do not seek our healing from this wound we will likely repeat the patterns in our own lives with our own children and their children. If we women do not seek healing from the lack of nurturing with a safe mother we too will repeat the patterns down through the generations of our families, either by mothering the way we were mothered or by abandoning our own needs the way they were once abandoned. This journey of perpetuating the cycle is called an inter generational pattern.
You have the power to break the generational pattern at play.
If you struggle with receiving love and knowing your own worth it may be related to the internal pain caused by the lack of attunement from your mother. The mother wound will block you from knowing yourself as worthy and also block you from fully receiving love from others.
If your needs for nurturing, safety, and unconditional love were unmet by your mother, it might be time to give that loss, that grief, the attention it needs so that you can dissolve the patterns, heal and move forward in ways that are in alignment with who you really are. The authentic self.
The good news is, there are steps you can take to find unconditional loving, restore the broken heart and dissolve the patterns in your consciousness.
As painful as it may be you must revisit the memories and find where the gaps are. Find the places in your consciousness that you perceived your lack of worth, your self abandonment, and your core wounding. This journey of connecting the dots around what you experienced, your role in it, and what you hold in your consciousness as the truth around the painful experiences helps you find your internal liberation and lay down the patterns of self rejection down for good. Dissolve them and release all the trapped emotion and energy that keeps attracting the pattern to begin with.
I see things through a Spiritual Context and would love to explain the idea that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. We have come here to earth school to learn through all we experience our spiritual curriculum. The lessons we have come to learn.
I believe we chose our families for the learning that will take place in our lifetimes and the conditioning that we experience while living with them.
I would love to help you re write your mother wound story and help you come home to greater levels of compassion, love and understanding for yourself as a spirit in a human body. Help you identify what it all meant and come home to all the exiled parts of self that occurred through your difficult painful experience.
I understand this journey deeply. I grew up in a home where an overarching pattern around money and intimacy played out incessantly between my parents, and it created a lot of fear in me as a child. I did not see clearly how deep that pattern ran until it began repeating itself in my own marriage. Through the tools and practices of spiritual psychology I took a long, honest look at codependency, how it lived in my mother in her dynamic with my father, and how it lived in me in my own dynamic with my ex husband.
I am happy to say that I did the real inner work to untangle, heal and release that codependency for good. I broke that cycle in my own life, and I am here to assist you in breaking yours.
The mother wound can create patterns that affect all parts of our lives and prevent us from living authentically.
