Spiritual Awakening Symptoms: Why It Can Feel Like Anxiety, Grief or Depression (and What Helps)
Nov 04, 2026
Many people expect a spiritual awakening to feel like light and bliss. Often it begins with something harder: a restlessness you can't explain, old pain coming to the surface, relationships that suddenly don't fit. If that's where you are, nothing is wrong with you.
What is the definition of a spiritual awakening?
A spiritual awakening is the moment you begin to see beyond the old patterns, beliefs and identities you have been living from, and remember who you are underneath them. Because those patterns once kept you safe, letting them go can bring up anxiety, grief or tiredness before it brings peace. These feelings are often a sign of change, not failure.
How do you know if you've had a spiritual awakening?
You usually know because you can't go back to seeing life the way you did before. Something that once felt normal, like over-giving in a relationship or staying small at work, now feels clearly out of alignment. You may not have words for it yet, but you feel a pull toward a more honest, more loving way of living.
What are the first and most common symptoms of a spiritual awakening?
The first signs are often quiet. You feel restless or empty in a life that looks fine from the outside. Old memories and feelings come back. You start noticing your own patterns, sometimes in the middle of repeating them. And you feel a growing hunger for meaning, quiet or prayer.
What are the 7 signs of a spiritual awakening?
These are the seven signs people describe most often:
- Old ways of living stop fitting. A job, a routine or a relationship that felt fine now feels empty or too small.
- Old pain resurfaces. Feelings you thought were finished come back to be felt and healed.
- You see your patterns clearly. People-pleasing, over-giving or shrinking become hard to ignore.
- You feel more sensitive. Crowds, noise, conflict or certain people drain you faster than before.
- You long for meaning. "Why am I here?" and "What is my purpose?" feel urgent.
- Your sleep and energy shift. You may feel exhausted, or wake in the night with a lot moving through you.
- You're drawn to quiet, prayer and nature. Time alone feels less lonely and more needed.
What are the 12 signs of a spiritual awakening?
Along with the seven above, many people also notice:
- Your relationships change. Some deepen, some fall away, and new people arrive who match who you're becoming.
- You judge less. You start to see the hurt behind other people's behavior, and your own.
- Synchronicities increase. The right book, person or message shows up at just the right time.
- You want to live more honestly. Pretending, even politely, starts to feel heavy.
- You feel a deeper connection to God or Spirit. Prayer, meditation or simply being present feels more alive.

What are the side effects of a spiritual awakening?
The most common side effects are emotional and physical tiredness, waves of grief, feeling disconnected from people you used to feel close to, changes in sleep and appetite, and a sense of being "between worlds." They usually soften as you integrate what you're learning. If physical symptoms are strong or don't ease, please check in with your doctor.
Can a spiritual awakening cause anxiety?
It can feel that way. When the beliefs and roles you built your life around begin to loosen, your nervous system may read that change as danger, even when it's a healing change. The ground feels less solid, and the mind tries to get control back by worrying.
What helps is meeting the feeling instead of fighting it. Slow your breath, put a hand on your heart and ask, gently, "What part of me is scared right now?" Often the answer is a younger part of you who learned that change wasn't safe. You can read more in Searching for Anxiety Therapy?

Are anxiety attacks spiritual?
An anxiety attack is first a real experience in your body, and it deserves real care. Please see a doctor to rule out medical causes, especially the first time. At the same time, many people find that anxiety rises during seasons of deep change, and that when they look underneath it, there is an old fear or an unhealed part asking for attention. Both can be true: your body needs support, and your soul may be asking you to look deeper.
What does it mean spiritually to feel anxious for no reason?
When anxiety seems to come from nowhere, it often comes from somewhere old. A feeling from childhood can be stirred by something small in the present, like a tone of voice, a change of plans or a quiet house. Spiritually, it can be an invitation to turn toward the younger you and say, "I'm right here with you."
Why does awakening feel like depression?
Awakening includes a lot of letting go, and letting go includes grief. You may be grieving who you thought you were, the life you planned or relationships that are changing. There can also be a quiet, empty season when the old way of living no longer works and the new one hasn't arrived yet.
That in-between season is real, and it deserves gentleness. It's not a sign that you're going backward.
Please hear this: if you feel hopeless for weeks, can't get through daily life, or have any thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out to a doctor or licensed mental health professional, or call or text 988 in the US. Spiritual support and medical care can work together, and you deserve both.
Why does awakening hurt before it heals?
Because healing asks you to feel what you once had to push away. The parts of you that were hurt, especially in childhood, were set aside so you could keep going. As you awaken, those parts come forward to be loved.
As I often say, healing is the application of love to the places inside that hurt. Nothing is being done to you. Something in you is finally ready to be met. You can learn more in How Does Spiritual Psychology Help You Heal Your Inner Child?
And when an old feeling comes back, it doesn't mean you haven't grown. Often it's a checkpoint that shows you how far you've come.
What are the 5 stages of spiritual awakening?
Teachers describe these stages differently, and they rarely happen in a neat line. Here is how I see them in the people I work with:
The third stage is often called the dark night of the soul. You can read more about it in What Is the Dark Night of the Soul? Signs, Meaning and How It Ends.
- The stirring. Something feels off, or a loss or life change cracks things open.
- The questioning. You begin to see your patterns and ask where they came from.
- The dark night. Old pain and grief surface. This is often the hardest part.
- The surrender. You stop fighting what is happening and begin to cooperate with it.
- The integration. New ways of living settle into your everyday life, relationships and choices.
What is the last stage of spiritual awakening?
The last stage is integration: living what you've awakened to. It's less about dramatic experiences and more about everyday choices, like keeping a boundary, speaking honestly or treating yourself with compassion when you slip. Many people move through all five stages more than once, each time a little deeper. In that sense, awakening doesn't end. It keeps opening.
What blocks a spiritual awakening?
Most often it's the parts of us working hard to keep us safe:
- Judgment, of yourself and others. Judgment is really self-condemnation, and it keeps us stuck in the very patterns we want to leave.
- Resisting what is happening. What you resist persists. Acceptance comes first, and then you can cooperate with the change.
- Trying to skip the feelings. Using spiritual ideas to avoid pain (sometimes called spiritual bypassing) slows healing down.
- Doing it all alone. Some of what surfaces is easier to see with someone beside you.
What are spiritual signs that someone is pulling on your energy?
As you become more sensitive, you notice how people affect you. Common signs are feeling drained or foggy after time with someone, feeling responsible for their moods, finding it hard to say no to them, or replaying conversations long after they end.
Usually this isn't about the other person "taking" from you. It shows you where a boundary is needed, or where an old habit of over-giving is still running. Strong boundaries and a daily practice of coming back to yourself are what help most.

How can a Spiritual Life Coach help with a spiritual awakening?
You don't have to figure out what's happening by yourself. As a Spiritual Life Coach and Spiritual Psychology Coach, I help you understand what's surfacing, find where the pattern began and meet the younger parts of you with compassion instead of judgment. We work with your nervous system and with prayer, so the changes feel safe in your body and real in your life.
I work with women and men in Santa Rosa, across Sonoma County, and online by Zoom.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a spiritual awakening last?
There's no set timeline. For some people the most intense season lasts a few months; for others it unfolds over years in waves. Awakening is less a single event than an ongoing process of seeing more clearly.
Can you go through a spiritual awakening and still live a normal life?
Yes. Most people keep working, parenting and loving while they awaken. What changes is how you show up: with more honesty, clearer boundaries and more compassion for yourself.
Is a spiritual awakening the same as a mental health crisis?
No, but they can feel similar, and they can happen at the same time. If you are struggling to function, feel hopeless or feel unsafe, please see a licensed professional. Spiritual coaching can support you alongside that care, not instead of it.
