Do I Need a Coach or a Therapist?
Sep 21, 2026
You know something needs to change. You do not know who to call.
If you are in crisis, if you cannot function day to day, or if you need a diagnosis, medication, or clinical treatment, see a licensed therapist first. If you are stable, you understand your patterns, and you are still living inside them anyway, that gap is where spiritual life coaching does its work. Many people need both, at different times, and sometimes at the same time.
When Should You See a Therapist First?
When the ground underneath you is not steady.
If you are in acute distress, if you are struggling to get through your days, if you are dealing with something that needs clinical assessment or medication, that is therapy territory. I am not a licensed therapist, and I will tell you so on the first call if I think that is what you need. There is no version of this where I stand between you and care that will keep you safe.
What Does a Coach Do That a Therapist Often Does Not?
We work with what is underneath the understanding.
Therapy is trained to work with the mind: understanding thoughts, managing symptoms, processing history. That work is real and I have deep respect for it. Spiritual Psychology starts somewhere else. It asks who you are beneath what is wrong, and what this experience is here to teach you. It treats a repeating pattern as spiritual curriculum rather than a malfunction to manage. I go deeper into the difference in Spiritual Psychology vs. therapy.
That is why so many of my clients come to me after years of good therapy. They can name the pattern. They can trace it to its origin. And they still feel its grip.
Can You Do Both at the Same Time?
Yes, and many people do.
A therapist holds the clinical layer. I hold the pattern layer, the belief underneath it, and the age where it formed. Those two things are not in competition, and I have never asked a client to leave a therapist to work with me.
How Do You Know Which One You Need Right Now?
Ask yourself what you are actually looking for.
If you need stability, symptom relief, or a diagnosis, that is therapy. If you need to understand what happened to you and process it, that is often therapy too. If you understand what happened, you have processed it, and the same thing keeps happening anyway, that is the work I do. You can see how that work unfolds in what happens in a spiritual life coaching session, and how long it takes in how long it takes to heal a relationship pattern.
There is no wrong first call. If you start with me and I believe you need clinical support, I will tell you.
What About Someone Who Calls Themselves Both?
Be careful here, and ask direct questions.
A therapist is licensed to diagnose and treat mental health conditions. A coach is not. I hold a Master of Science in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica and I have practiced ThetaHealing since 2005, and I describe what I do as work in consciousness. I am not a psychologist. That is a different license altogether, and the distinction matters.
If cost is part of what you are weighing, I list my rates plainly in how much spiritual life coaching costs.

What Else Do People Ask About Coaching Versus Therapy?
Is coaching covered by insurance?
No. Coaching is not clinical treatment and is not billed to insurance.
Can coaching help with anxiety?
Coaching can work with the pattern underneath anxious responses. For clinical anxiety, please also work with a licensed provider.
What if I am not sure?
