Have you ever noticed that the same wound keeps showing up in a relationship, wearing a different face each time?

This is one of the most common things people bring to me. Different partner, same ache. The circumstances change, the person changes, and somehow the story repeats itself almost exactly, the same fear of being too much, the same waiting to be chosen, the same slow disappearing act you swore you would never let happen again. Most people assume this means they keep choosing badly, or that something is simply broken in them. It is rarely either one. If you are tired of repeating painful patterns in relationships, you are not broken. You are patterned. And patterns can change.

Spiritual Psychology, the discipline I trained in at the University of Santa Monica, calls this a perceptual filter, the lens we see life and love through, built early and usually without our permission. That filter is populated with old emotional hurts, and it does not sit quietly in the past. It reaches into the present and draws in people and situations that match it, again and again, so that the unresolved material underneath finally has a chance to surface and be healed. This is why a struggle with a current partner is so rarely only about that partner. It is the unconscious doing what it does, bringing the old wound back around until it is finally seen. If the pattern you keep meeting looks more like control or devaluation than simple heartbreak, I have written more specifically about healing from a narcissist.

My own perceptual filter formed early, around a rejection pattern with my father, long before I had language for what it was. That rejection did not stay contained to childhood. It followed me into how I loved men for years afterward, and it eventually showed up in my own marriage as a kind of role reversal, where I found myself carrying more than my share, parenting the relationship instead of partnering it, giving from an old wound instead of from a whole place.

Doing the deeper work, going to the root of that pattern instead of only managing its surface, changed what I was able to see. Once the pattern was actually healed rather than simply understood, I no longer needed it repeated. That clarity eventually led me to complete a marriage I had outgrown, including the divorce that followed. Nothing sudden had gone wrong. I had finished what that particular chapter of my spiritual curriculum came to teach me, and I could feel the difference between staying out of fear and leaving from a grounded, sovereign yes.

True freedom in this work rarely comes from deciding the other person was wrong. It comes from forgiving yourself for ever having judged yourself unworthy of something different in the first place. That shift, from blame to self-compassion, is what actually lets you see someone, a partner, a parent, even yourself, through soul centered eyes instead of through the old filter.

These days I hold a real boundary around punishing patterns, in my own consciousness and in my relationships. Not from a place of fear or defense, but because I have done the work of loving from a whole place rather than an old wound, and I am no longer willing to abandon myself to keep a pattern alive.

This is also how I work with clients who come to me repeating a relationship pattern, in the same way I describe what a Spiritual Psychology coach does. We rarely start with the current partner. We start further back, with the belief the pattern was actually built to protect, and we do the slower work of regulating the nervous system, naming what is really running underneath, and restructuring it at the root rather than managing it at the surface one more time.

If you recognize yourself in this, the same wound in a different face, know that the pattern can be healed, not just understood. Book a session and let's discover what your own spiritual curriculum has been asking of you.

Wondering where these old beliefs actually come from, and how to finally let them go? Here is how Spiritual Psychology helps you forgive yourself.
