What Are Golden Handcuffs, and How Do You Break Free?
Oct 27, 2026
The paycheck is good. The benefits are good. Everyone around you says you are so lucky.
And every Sunday night, something inside you sinks.
You know there is more for you. You can feel your soul knocking. Yet the thought of walking away from the security feels impossible, so you stay, and you keep showing up, and you keep a smile on your face.
I know this place well. For many years I was living it.
What Are Golden Handcuffs?
Golden handcuffs are the rewards that keep you in a job you would otherwise leave. In business, the term means bonuses, stock or benefits that pay out only if you stay. In life, golden handcuffs are the money, title and security that hold you in a role your soul has outgrown. From a Spiritual Psychology view, they are also part of your curriculum.
In this clip from The Self Love Show, I share what it was like to be trapped in a job with golden handcuffs, and what I see now that I look back.
Why Do I Feel Empty When My Job Looks So Good on Paper?
You feel empty because you are living your goal line and not your soul line.
In Spiritual Psychology we talk about these two lines. The goal line is everything we were taught to want. The education, the dream job, the dream car, the white picket fence. There is nothing wrong with any of it. A golden handcuffs job can look perfect from the outside.
The soul line is different. It is what your soul came here to be and do.
When the two lines do not match, you can have everything on the outside and still ask yourself, why do I feel so empty? That emptiness is not a sign that you are ungrateful. It is your soul asking to be heard.
I made great money in that job. I was also deeply unsatisfied, craving and yearning to step fully into the work I do now. It never showed on the outside. Inside, I was baby stepping my way forward every single day.
What Are Golden Handcuffs Trying to Teach Me?
Golden handcuffs are rarely only about the job. They are often holding a piece of your spiritual curriculum, the lessons your soul came into this lifetime to learn.
The process of getting free was long for me. So long that at times I doubted it would ever happen. Hindsight is 20/20, and now I can see it clearly. I was completing some very difficult childhood curriculum through that whole process.
The job was the classroom. The patterns I learned as a young one were playing out right there in my daily life. Where I gave my power away. Where I stayed small to stay safe. Where I abandoned what I wanted so I would not rock the boat.
This is why simply quitting does not always set you free. If the core patterning comes with you, it will find you again in the next job, the next relationship, the next room you walk into.
When you look at your situation through soul centered eyes, you can ask a different question. Set down "how do I get out of here" for a moment, and ask "what is my learning here?" That one question changes everything. If staying has started to feel like abandoning yourself, my post What Is Self-Betrayal? goes deeper into that pattern.
How Do I Break Free From Golden Handcuffs?
You break free one baby step at a time, by tending to what is happening inside you as much as what is happening outside you. These are practices rooted in Spiritual Psychology that I use myself and with my clients.
- Name the feeling honestly. Let yourself say it out loud: I am unsatisfied here. Pretending you are fine keeps the handcuffs on.
- Ask what your soul is learning. Write freely about where this situation feels familiar. Where have you felt this trapped before? Let the pattern show itself.
- Meet yourself with compassion. Every place you judge yourself for staying, offer compassionate self-forgiveness instead. Judgment keeps you stuck. Forgiveness frees up the energy you need to move.
- Get curious about your gifts. If you can dream it, it was given to you for a reason. Ask what gifts you carry and how they want to be lived.
- Take one small step every day. A class. A conversation. An hour a week on the thing that lights you up. These steps may not show on the outside yet. They are still real.
- Give it over. Each morning, say to Spirit: this life is yours, how would you have me live it? Then listen.

What Else Do People Ask About Golden Handcuffs?
What does golden handcuffs mean?
Golden handcuffs means anything that rewards you for staying where you are, so leaving feels too costly. At work it is often deferred pay or stock. On a soul level it is the comfort and approval that keep you from your purpose.
Is it wrong to stay in a job for the money?
No. Security matters, and caring for yourself and your family is sacred. The invitation is to stay with awareness, so the job supports your soul's path while you take steps toward it.
Should I just quit my job?
Sometimes leaving is right. Often it works best to clear the patterns that keep you stuck first. When the inner work is done, the outer change tends to come with more ease and less fear.
How long does it take to break free from golden handcuffs?
For me it was a long stretch, and every step counted, even the ones no one else could see. Your timeline is your own. Small daily steps add up.
Can a Spiritual Psychology Coach Help Me Find My Way Out?
Yes. Everything I walked through in that job is now part of how I help others. I can connect the dots for you. Where you gave your power away. Where the same pattern keeps repeating. Where your gifts have been waiting underneath it all.
You do not have to figure this out alone. It is not figure-out-able from the head anyway. Let the heart lead.
