Have you asked yourself what you are actually here to do, and gotten quiet instead of an answer?

Purpose is one of the questions clients bring me most, and it is usually not because they have no ideas. Most people I work with have several ideas. What they do not have is a felt sense of their own worth apart from what they produce, and without that foundation, no idea ever feels like quite enough to commit to. Spiritual Psychology, the discipline I trained in at the University of Santa Monica, teaches that the soul uses every experience in a human life, the joyful ones and the painful ones alike, as material for its own awakening. Your unresolved issues and your gifts are not separate categories. Both are part of what USM calls your spiritual curriculum, the specific combination of struggles to move through and contributions to offer that only you carry in exactly this way.

This is why purpose work has to start on the inside rather than the outside. Most approaches to finding your purpose ask you to look outward, at your skills, your options, the market, what people would pay for. Spiritual Psychology asks a different question first. It asks what relationship you actually have with yourself, underneath all of that. The relationship you are seeking on the outside, whether that is the right work, the right recognition, or the right sense of contribution, begins with the relationship you have cultivated with yourself first. When that foundation shifts, what you are drawn to do in the world shifts with it, often without you having to force an answer at all.

I see this constantly with clients who come to me feeling behind on purpose, as though everyone else got a clear download and they alone are still guessing. What is usually true is that they are still filtering their own gifts through an old, exiled part of themselves that never felt qualified to have them. Once that part is met and healed, purpose stops being a question you have to solve intellectually. It becomes something you recognize, because you are finally seeing yourself clearly enough to notice what has been asking for your attention all along.

Your spiritual curriculum includes both what has been unresolved in you and what you came here to offer, and those two things are usually much closer together than people expect. The very struggle you have worked hardest to move through is often the exact thing that lets you meet someone else in theirs. This is true of my own path. The years I spent healing my own conditioning, learning to heal the inner child underneath my choices and finally leave behind what no longer served me, became the foundation of the work I now do helping other people do the same. Purpose was never separate from my healing. It was built from it.

If you have been searching outward for your purpose and coming up with a list of options instead of a felt sense of direction, this may be why. Growing past old conditioning and finally changing your outer life for good starts on the inside, as I describe in what Spiritual Psychology actually is, and once you have done real work there, purpose tends to stop being a question and start being a recognition.
