Age Stage Healing for Abandonment Wounds
Sep 15, 2026
The relationship ends, or someone pulls away, or a friend goes quiet for a few days, and the reaction inside you is enormous, completely out of proportion to what actually happened. You know, intellectually, that this is not the end of the world. The part of you in a full body panic did not get that memo.
Age stage healing addresses abandonment wounds by returning to the specific age and stage where being left, ignored, or emotionally unavailable to first taught your nervous system that abandonment was a real and present danger, and repatterning that belief at its root. Once the original age is met, present-day separations stop triggering a survival-level response.
Why does a small separation feel like a crisis?
Because your nervous system is not actually reacting to the present moment. It is reacting to an earlier moment, one where being left truly was dangerous, when you depended completely on someone who was not consistently there. A partner running late, a friend not replying, a small disagreement, any of these can reach backward and touch that original wound, and your body responds to the size of the original threat, not the size of what is actually happening now.
What age do abandonment wounds usually form at?
Often in infancy or early childhood, before you had words for what was happening, when a caregiver was physically or emotionally absent in a way that felt, to a small nervous system, like survival itself was at stake. It does not require dramatic neglect. Even ordinary inconsistency, a parent present sometimes and unavailable other times, can be enough to teach a young nervous system that connection cannot be trusted to stay.
Can you actually heal an abandonment wound, or only cope with it?
You can heal it, though most approaches only teach you to cope with it, better communication, more reassurance, calming techniques for the moment of panic. Those help in the moment. They do not touch the age where the wound was formed. Age stage healing goes there directly, meets the part of you still bracing for abandonment, restructures what happened, and reparents that part until it no longer expects to be left.
How long before abandonment triggers actually calm down?
It varies, but relief tends to come sooner than full resolution. Many people notice the intensity of their reactions softening within the first several sessions of going back to that original age, even before the deeper work is complete. The full repatterning, the point where abandonment stops being your nervous system's default expectation, takes longer, and is part of the fuller timeline we build together.
I wrote more about how this work is structured in What Is Age Stage Healing?, and about the self-abandonment piece of this pattern in What Is Self-Betrayal?
