Searching for a Divorce Therapist? What Actually Helps You Heal
Sep 08, 2026Are you searching for a divorce therapist because your marriage is ending and you do not know how you are going to survive it?
I want to say this first. That search is not weakness. It is wisdom. You know you cannot do this alone, and you are right.
Most people who type "divorce therapist" into Google are looking for the same few things. Someone to help them stop crying long enough to function. Someone to help them make sense of who they are without the person they built a life with. Someone to tell them the anger, the relief, the grief, the guilt, all tangled together, is normal. A good therapist can absolutely offer that. Processing what happened matters. Naming your feelings matters.
But here is what I have seen after a decade of working with women through their divorces. Coping with what happened is only the first layer. Underneath it is a deeper question most therapists are not trained to ask. Why this relationship? Why this pattern of loving, of losing, of feeling unseen or unchosen? Why does it feel so familiar, like you have been here before, even in a different body, a different name, a different house?
This is where my training in Spiritual Psychology at the University of Santa Monica shapes how I work. I am not a therapist, and I want to be honest about that distinction. What I offer is spiritual life coaching, and it lives in a different place. Therapy often helps you cope with and understand your past. Coaching, as I practice it, helps you meet the pattern underneath the pain and actually change your relationship to it, so it stops repeating.
Your marriage was not random. It was part of your spiritual curriculum. That does not mean you deserved the pain, and it does not mean you should have stayed. It means the relationship was showing you something about your own core patterning, the exiled parts of yourself that learned long ago to shrink, to over give, to distrust, to disappear in order to be loved. Divorce has a way of ripping the mask off all of it at once. That is why it is one of the most disorienting things a person can move through. It is also why it can become one of the most awakening.
You do not have to choose between therapy and this work. Many of my clients have both, and both matter. But if you are searching for a divorce therapist because you want someone to help you understand yourself, not just survive what happened to you, that is exactly the work I do.
If you have not read it yet, I wrote about the signs it might be time to leave a marriage, even when it scares you, in an earlier post on this blog. If you are already on the other side of that decision, this is where the deeper healing begins.
